Color and Drawing in Expressionist Painting

Instructor: Jason Shawn Alexander

Max: 25 Students

Nov. 12th, 2PM-8PM

(Please arrive 20 minutes early. Parking is residential and easy.)

Jason Shawn Alexander uniquely combines expertise as a fine-art painter and a highly inventive comic book illustrator. Through these parallel pursuits, he's developed a remarkable facility for altering, enlivening, and abstracting the figure for the range of graphic and narrative impact.

In this 6 hour workshop, Jason will demonstrate and teach through the process of adapting photo reference for clearly and forcefully drawing a figure that is to be elaborated intuitively in paint.

THE WORKSHOP WILL INCLUDE:

I. A 30-minute presentation of Jason's work and biography, with audience Q & A.

II. A 1.5 hour demonstration of Jason's initial painting phase and in-progress engagement of a painting.

Jason will bring in both a prepared drawing on canvas and an unfinished painting. He'll demonstrate both how he initiates a painting as well as how he reengages and layers an in-progress work.

III. A 4-hour interactive work session.

Students will begin their own pieces or continue on in-progress figurative works, either from photographs or from imagination. Jason will make rounds to advise students on how to load in flesh colors, clarify drawn concepts, and develop and diversify the material surface of the picture. At this time, students are encouraged to discuss their portfolios with Jason to  take the most individualized value from his expertise.
