Graphic Storytelling: The One-Page Comic

Instructor: Dave Crosland

Max: 30 Students

May 14th, 1PM-5PM

(Please arrive 20 minutes early. Parking is residential and easy.)

Dave Crosland is an illustrator and narrative artist who deftly combines whimsy, wit, and a deep understanding of reference and subject matter to make tightly calibrated story-telling images. He's worked variously as a concept artist and writer in animation, editorial illustration, and comics.

In this 4 hour workshop, Dave will demonstrate and teach through the process of developing a script into a single comic page. The class will proceed from initial sketches through to a finish in multi-media drawing and painting. This class is ideal for anyone with an interest in traditional comic book creation or simply improving their visual narrative abilities. The parameters of the workshop keep the project open to a range of artistic intentions.

ALL SKILL LEVELS AND AGES ARE WELCOME.

THE WORKSHOP WILL INCLUDE:

I. A 30-minute presentation of Dave's work and biography, with audience Q & A.

II. A 20-minute demonstration of Dave's initial sketching phase in reference to his own script.

III. A 20-minute demonstration of Dave's inking and multi-media approach to finishing a page that is already in progress.

III. A 3-hour interactive work session.

Students will begin working on a page developed from their own script or from a script that Dave supplies. Dave will make the rounds, assisting students at any point in the development of their pages. Towards the end of class, as students' concepts and images become more clear and presentable, Dave will showcase students' work to the rest of the class, indicating success, potential, and novelty. Student feedback is encouraged in the hope that this is as collectively educational an experience as possible.
